The restrictions to be lifted for two days apply to the lighting of shop fronts, streets, cinemas and the like, but no special illuminations will be allowed and as the restrictions do not apply to the South Island special illuminations will be possible there.
"According to messages broadcast from overseas it would appear that in certain countries V-J Day will not be declared till after the formal act of surrender has been signed by the Japanese." said the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser), referring tonight to the arrangements to celebrate the defeat and surrender of Japan. "This may not take place for some time, possibly some days after official information is received of the surrender by the Japanese. In the circumstances it is not proposed to delay the celebrations in New Zealand. These will be held after receipt cf official information that the Japanese Government has surrendered notwithstanding that at that time the formal act of surrender mav not have been signed.
"As was stated on Saturday last the official announcement of the' Japanese surrender will be notified o'er the radio and in the Press. Arrangements to mark this event which were outlined in my earlier statement will then follow. While recognising the natural anxiety of the public at this time. I ask everyone to take care not to act on rumours, of which there are many at, the moment. The mil li have mv full assurance that immediately official news of toe surrender i received an official announcement will be made."
