CONCRETE POLES FOR POWER BOARD
No Change In System Of Manufacture After reporting on the manufacture of concrete pole: at the Board's Washdyke factory under co-operative contract as against the present method of day labour, the manager uMr J M Bishopi recommended to a meeting of the South Canterbury Electric Power Board yesterday that. while the factory is in its early rears of production. no departure be made from the present day labour scheme. "Wlu'n production has settled down lo n smooth routine (which it is not doing at present) in. sav. a rear or
twos time. I lie question of contract manufacture could be looked into again. The position is that while it may lapossible to save a little on each nole by eor’racl such n high qualify product is being made that the risk of reduced quality .attendant on the reduced erst is far too high tor us to take," Mr Bishop said. Last .' ear we made *267 poll's oi i lIK'I better than half a pole a man I a dav. This present year we should i easily aftfiin t hreequa rt ers of a pole a man a day and next year 1 have ! ■'very reason to expect that we will ! better the goal figure and reach one | and a quarter poles a man a dav ! under day labour conditions. The best 1 possible out.Dut is one and a half poles | a man a day Our factory layout would not allow of any greater output. I Therefore the greatest, saving that we can expect under a contract system j would be an increase of output from I one and a quarter poles a day I up to one and a half poles a man a ’ day; that is to say an increase of hair I a pole a day or 120 poles a year. In I actual tact the iving under contract | would nrobablv amount to no more ! ♦ han 50 poles a year at a saving of 1 8 a pole.” The Board adopted the recommendation of the manager.
