CELEBRATION OF PEACE
Victory Procession Arrangements Made To celebrate the victory over Japan, a thanksgiving service, victory procession, entertainment for the children and a grand bonfire. will be held in Timaru. The victory procession will start from North Street at 2 p.m. and proceed via Stafford. Canon and Sophia Streets to the Timaru Borough Council where a brief address will be given by the Mayor, followed by community singing, an impromptu concert, open air dancing and a mock court conducted by the Savage Club. The marshal of the procession will be Mr C. H. Shackcll, and all organisations are requestea to join in the parade. Borough Councillors, the Rev. Clyde Carr. M.P.. local bodies. Returned Services' Association. Trade Unions, E.P.S.. W.W.S.A. and all women's organisations will take part. All local firms are asked to decorate lorries, with personnel in fancy dre-s. whether parading with the procession or as separate units. Traffic Arrangements Stafford Street will be closed to traffic during the ueace celebrations, and when the sirens are sounded motorists and cyclists are requested to remove their cars and bicycles from the main street. While not wishing to curb the enjoyment of anyone, the Police and the Traffic Department warn the public against leaving motor vehicles unattended or bringing them into the main streets unless they are driven in the procession. Previously a number of people have parked their cars in Stafford Street with the idea of seeing me procession in comfort, but past experience has shown that this is not the case, as their view is usually blocked by people standing in front of the vehicles. The Inspector ol Police (Mr D. L. Calwell.i said that, while it is realised that all are entitled to enjoy themselves to the full extent on such an occasion, the rights of persons and property must be protected and acts of violence and damage to property will be dealt with accordingly. Thanksgiving Service A thanksgiving service will be held at the Sound Shell. Caroline Bay, on the morning after the declaration of peace, and services will be held in all churches the same evening. Members of the Choral Society are asked to attend the thanksgiving service at the Sound Shell. Every endeavour is being made to create an impression on the younger generation during the two days of celebration and, apart from joining in all the processions, the children will have a grand victory party on Caroline Bay, where sports have been arranged by the Council of Sport. Should the weather be wet the entertainment will take place at the schools. Wreaths will be placed on the WaiMemorial in the presence, of the Mayor. Borough Councillors, Returned Services’ Association and Homeservicemen's Association at a time to be announced later. Torchlight Procession With the facilities available on the Lay the torchlight procession should be an outstanding event. In the time available the Boy Scouts are doing their best to provide a spectacular bonfire, and the public are asked to join in the torchlight procession, which will leave King George’s Place at 7.30 p.m. for Caroline Bay. Timaru is fortunate in having such a large number of enthusiastic bandsmen. both young and old. and the many bands will be on duty, for long hours helping to make the celebrations a success. On all occasions the Timaru Municipal. Highland Pipe. Salvation Army Boys’ High School. Harmonica. Waimataital, Main and West School Bands will supply music.
In the event of wet weather citizens are requested to celebrate if at ah possible and. wherever possible, alternative programmes nave been arranged.
