GUILTY OF ASSAULT

Six Weeks’ Imprisonment (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 30. John William Alexander Wardle (30), a male nurse in the Wellington Hospital who was charged in the Supreme Court with assaulting a patient, Neil Olwin Moore, so as to cause actual bodily harm, was found guilty of common assault. It was alleged that he struck the patient who was attempting to leave Wellington Hospital on March 15, causing a rupture of the liver. The defence was that the patient actually was injured in a previous attempt to escape when he was so violent that it required five persons to restrain him. The jury returned a verdict of guilty of common assault. Mr Justice Blair imposed a sentence of six weeks’ imprisonment.
