DRAMA LEAGUE

School And Festival

Dates Arranged A meeting of the executive of the South Canterbury Drama League was presided over by the president (Mr W. G. Tweedy). A letter was received from Mr Paul Latham, producer of the Christchurch Repertory Society, agreeing to act as director of the drama school being ’organised by the executive provided the school were held on June 30 and July 1. He also submitted a comprehensive syllabus of the subjects to be considered at the school, and suggested that Miss F. King should accompany him as his assistant. It was agreed to hold the school on the dates suggested and to approve the syllabus as submitted. A sub-committee consisting of the president, secretary (Mr H. L. Warsaw) and Messrs C. F. B. Clarke and C. Don was appointed to make all arrangements for the school. A letter was received from Mr Arnold Goodwin, of Auckland, who had been invited to act as judge of the annual festival, stating that he would not be able to come to Timaru on the dates in September previously suggested, but indicating that he could probably do so if the festival were held earlier in the month. It was decided to alter the opening date to September 4 in a hope that this, would sut Mr Goodwin’s arrangements. Mr A. E. Lawrence reported that approval had been given from Headquarters, Wellington, to the proposal (0 hold a South Island festival in Timaru this year, and it was decided to invite Mr Goodwin to judge at this festival. Reports submitted on the proposed junior drama festival indicated that considerable interest was being shown by the various schools and organisations, and there was every prospect of a most successful festival being held. It was resolved to present a threeact period play toward the end of the year.

A letter was received from the secretary of the Wellington Repertory Society suggesting that a conference be held to consider the formation of a Federation of Repertory Societies. The objects were to handle all royalty questions on behalf of affiliated societies, to arrange for the hiring of costumes and, generally, stimulate interest in repertory work throughout the Dominion. It was decided to support the suggestion and, if at all possible, to send a delegate to the conference.
