WINCHESTER SOCIAL COMMITTEE

Patriotic Quota Discussed A meeting of the Social Committee was held in the Library on Wednesday evening. Mr B. Trumper presided over a full attendance of members. The chairman reported on the meeting of the Zone Committee and said that the Winchester quota for this year was £446 as against £294 in the previous year. The extra was for a welfare fund for returning soldiers of this war. With the higher quota much extra work would be required and some other means besides direct giving would have to be resorted to.

An animated discussion took place as to ways and means of raising the quota. A further vigorous debate took place as regards the disposal of the surplus from last year, it being finally carried on a majority vote that the surplus should be handed to the Temuka Zone to help bring up deficits of other groups provided other districts did the same. At the conclusion of the meeting of the committee, a public meeting was held in the Library to consider ways ancT means of raising the patriotic quota. After a full and frank discussion it was agreed that a gymkhana be held and various committees and sub-com-mittees were set up. Mr Trumper was elected chairman of the gymkhana and Mr J. Baker secretary. It was decided the gymkhana should be held on May Euchre Party The first of the Library euchre parties for the winter season drew a good attendance. Prize winners were Mrs Hopkinson and Mr Blissett. Personal Cable advice has been received by Mrs Connolly, that her son, Private Thomas William Connolly, who has been a prisoner of war, has arrived safely in the United Kingdom.
