LAST RITES

Funeral Of Mr H. B. S. Johnstone The respect in which Mr H. B. S. Johnstone, who died on Tuesday, was held by the farming and business community of South Canterbury was expressed in the representative attendance at the funeral, which took place in St. Mary’s churchyard at Otaio yesterday afternoon. The cortege, which left Mr Johnstone’s home, Springbank, was probably the largest ever seen in the district. The service at the graveside, conducted by Canon H. J. W. Knights, was short but impressive. The pall-bearers were two of Mr Johnstone’s sons, Mr H. B. L. Johnstone and Lieutenant O. C. Johnstone and Messrs Gerald Mathias, C. L. Mathias, H. C. Lawrence and W. Campbell. Included in the representatives of local bodies in the district were Messrs J. Bitchener, A. 8. Elworthy, W. Lindsay, J. Stowell, R. Sinclair, L. J. Collins and W. P. Black (Waimate County Council), Dr. P. R. Woodhouse (Catchment Board), Messrs M. C. Harper (South Canterbury Hunt), C. L. Orbell, W. H. Orbell. H. H. Fraser, C. H. S. Johnston (Timaru A. and P. Association) and A. W. Barnett and J. Dempsey (Farmers’ Union). There were also present representatives of the business firms of which Mr Johnstone was a director, mercantile houses and farmers of the district.
