LAWN TENNIS MAORI PARK

Association To Pay For Maintenance The offer oi tire Timaru Borough | Council to put the Maori Park tennis courts in playing order for the New | Year tournament, provided the As- i sociation met the cost, was accepted at [ a meeting of the management commit- I tee of the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association last night. The acceptance is conditional on the maintenance fulfilling requirements. The secretary 'Mr P. W. Youngi reported that since the correspondence with the Council a meeting had been held with members of the reserves committee, and the Borough Curator (Mr A. W. Anderson) had estimated that the cost of the maintenance would be between £lO and £l5. The marking of the courts would be the responsibility of the Association, added the secretary, who estimated that the total cost to the Association, including the tournament expenses, would be about £2O. If £2O was to be spent to put the courts in order for the New Year tournament and again for the junior rnament a month later, why not allow the public to play on the courts In the meantime? asked Mr H. L. Adam. The public last year were so keen to play on grass that they broke In the fence. After some discussion the meeting agreed that it. ->ould be impracticable to throw the courts open without having a caretaker in charge, and the Association was not in a position to meet t : expense. A sub-committee comprising the chairman <Mr D. T. Gardner), secretary and Messrs A. M. Robertson and R Armstrong was appointed to supervise the dlstrlbuti- of tennis balls to affiliated clubs. It was agreed to allocate balls to clubs for opening day on the same basis as last year. An application from the Returned Services' Association for assistance in meeting the cost of the new club rooms by donation or function was referred to the incoming management committee for favourable consideration. AORANGI CLUB Three courts have been topdressed and the property is in excellent order for the incoming season, states the annual report of the Aorangi Lawn Tennis Club. The standard of junior tennis in the club was high, as was evidenced by the performance of Maureen Adam, who w’as the junior champion; Jack Adam, joint holder of the junior doubles, and Pauleen Young, who won the under 15 championship. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance, but the mortgage on the courts was still £940.
