COMPLAINTS OF WASTE REFUTED
State Vegetable Projects
(N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON. Jan. 14. The Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. B. Roberts) said to-night that he had made a personal examination of certain complaints regarding the undue wastage of vegetables on Government projects, and was completely satisfied that there was no excessive waste on State projects. There was unavoidable waste, as experienced by all growers when the natural hazards interfered with harvesting or spoiled the crops, but the Government was determined that controllable waste should be reduced to the absolute minimum. Vegetables on State projects were primarily grown to supply the Forces, but. where any surplus occurred, it would be immediately handed to the Internal Marketing Division for sale on the local market.
He also arranged for hospitals and similar institutions near State projects to draw supplies, in addition to normal supplies through the usual channels, when there was a surplus available, charitable organisations in reach of State farms were invited to avail themselves of such supplies.
