“SCOUT’S OWN”

Service At Raincliff

Vice-Regal Party Attend

“The Scout's Own,” a special form of service observed throughout the Scout world, was held at the Raincliff Scout camp yesterday morning. The service took place in the Shrine, a spot dedicated to services of worship within the camp. A raised cross, made of rough-hewn pine logs lashed to a sequoia tree, occupies a centre place between two other giant sequoia trees, which shade the Shrine. Grouped in semi-circle formation are a number of rows of rough-dressed logs, which are used as seats.

At 10.30 a.m. the official party, comprising their Excellencies, the Gover-nor-General Sir Cyril Newall. and Lady Newall. Major C. J. HollandMartin and Major P. H. Johnson, were conducted to the Shrine by Commissioner J. C, Bentley, and the camp chief, Captain S. A. Smith. The camp chief conducted the service, his Excellency read the Lesson, and the talk was given by the camp quartermaster, Captain H. W. Simpson. The talk was based on the camp symbol “V.S.”—Victory through Service.”
