ENDURANCE TEST
“First Class” Scout
Journey
Vice-Regal Interest
One of the tests for self reliance and endurance for the senior Scouts is the “first class” Journey. The journey consists of a 14 mile hike with full hiking kit over country which the Scouts have not previously traversed. Before leaving camp, the Scouts setting out on this test are required to report to the camp chief from whom they receive a sealed envelope with instructions regarding the journey. On reachtag the selected camp site, they seek permission from the owner to camp on his property, then cook a meal and camp In their small “hike” tent for the night. The following morning after making their own breakfast, they return to the main camp by anotner route, bringing with them a report of their trip. It is required that they make a map, using the conventional Scout signs, of the whole journey. This year six Scouts have alreadyundertaken this test at the Raincliff Scout camp, and it is expected that others will undertake the trip before the conclusion of the camp. Their Excellencies Sir Cyril and Lady Newall have taken a special interest in this side of scouttag activity. This morning wher four Scouts had full packs on their backs ready for the road, they were approached by their Excellencies and questioned regarding their 24 hour “hike”.
