TEMUKA CANNOT AFFORD SUBSIDY

Council And Scheme 13 Workers Resealing Of Main Highway Not Possible In their report at the meeting of the Temuka Borough Council yesterday evening, the Works Committee stated that correspondence had been received from the Social Security Department advising that a 100 per cent subsidy would be paid to March 31, 1942, for 23 workers on the Domain and 27 in the streets. On and after this date the subsidy would be £4 a man, leaving 19/9 to be found by the council. The council adopted the committee’s recommendation that the Department be informed that the council could not afford to pay anything towards the cost of keeping Scheme 13 workers in employment. The borough foreman and the curator were instructed to interview Scheme 13 workers and notify them that full time according to the award, must be worked. The Mayor (Mr W. H. McMillan) presided and the following councillors were present: J. Burns, F. J. Chapman, J. Gourley, W. L. Harrison, C. D. Hayhurst, P. H. Lynch, J. M. A. Ritchie, and T. N. Scott. The new town clerk, Mr F. W. McDonald, was given a welcome by the Mayor, who expressed the wish that his stay in Temuka would be happy and would prove valuable both to the council and himself. . Correspondence was received from the District Highways Council saying that it was not probable that a survey of the Temuka borough’s section of the Timaru-Christchurch highway could be carried out before the end of the financial year, as the department was short of staff and officers who might have been available were employed on defence work. The Mayor said that several applications had been made to have the work of regrading and topdressing the road included in the Mam Highway Board's estimates and it was to be hoped that it would not be long before this portion of the highway was brought into conformity with the remainder. It was decided that a letter be sent to the Highways Council to The registering of dogs in the borough is to be postponed until Match 15 on account of the difficulty In obtaining collars. A letter was received from a Christchurch surveyor asking if tests had been made for pumping water from a trial Well near the existing standby pump. The borough foreman (Mr T. Devine) reported that tests had been made with the existing pump. A slight fault had occurred in the motor, but when this was repaired further tests would be carried out. Inquiries had been made for the hire of a larger unit. The matter Was left over until further information should come to hand. The Finance Committee reported that accounts paid since last meeting amounted to £2312/13/5. The total receipts for the period amounted to £2239/8/8 and the total expenditure £2907/19/2. Wool classing The Temuka Technical Classes Association is considering at the present time the question of holding the wool classing again this year. The chairman, Mr J. T. Smart, in an interview, stated that intending students should notify either the secretary of Mr Farrell at the earliest opportunity, as wool had to be retained for the use of the classes.
