WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

GLENITI There was a good attendance at the May meeting of the Gleniti Women’s Institute and Mrs Black welcomed a number of visitors and one new member. Sympathy was extended to Mrs Pringle in her bereavement, also to Mrs North and Mrs Gardener, who are ill, and to Mrs Cross, whose daughter is ill in hospital. Invitations were received from Geraldine and Lyalldale institutes to their birthday parties. Members were asked to support the W.I. Depot by supplying goods and knitted articles for sale. Mrs Winnington reported having sent into the Patriotic Committee eight balaclavas, one pair socks, six pairs mittens, five scarves, two pair gloves and six pairs minesweepers gloves. Mrs Black gave a comprehensive report of the annual meeting of the Waimate District Federation. Mrs Finlay reported on Federation business, Patriotic Committee, and group work. Members were asked to give one or more pillow-cases to the Red Cross Emergency Hospital at Bluecliffs. The sale of poppies conducted by members through the Glenitidistrict resulted in £7/1/- being returned to the R.S.A. Mrs Mclntosh gave a demonstration of making flowers from old felt hats. She also had on show some very pretty articles. Mrs Bannerman thanked Mrs McIntosh on behalf of the members. It was agreed that the cup be given for most points gained during the year, with the exception of the specimen bloom, which is in a class by itself. Competitions resulted as follows: Specimen bloom, Mrs D. Ramsay; best bunch of chrysanthemums, Mrs Black and Mrs Rawson equal 1, Mrs D. Ramsay 3, Mrs Finlay 4.
