A.C.E.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE “The work of Miss Robins has been thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated by our members and we hope that she will be available again next year.” This was the unanimous opinion of the members of the South Canterbury A.C.E. Advisory Committee which met yesterday to consider the results of the tutor’s work during the last four months and to make recommendations for next year. Those present were Mesdames Chisnall (Woodbury, convener), Harvey (Orari), A. H. Gillingham (Fairlie), McLeod (Taiko), and Steven (Rosewill), and Misses O. Macmillan and R. T. Robins (organiser and tutor respectively on the staff of the A.C.E. University of Otago). Miss Robins’ report showed that her time had been more than filled and that a number of requests for service had had to be refused. The applicants were hopeful that next year their needs might be filled. When her next three weeks of work were completed, she would have spoken at more than 102 meetings, consisting of 41 lecturedemonstrations, and 61 lessons with study groups. Attendances had been excellent, approximately 900 attending the lecture-demonstrations, while the 74 who had enrolled in the five nutrition and four dress and patternmaking classes had been most regular in their attendance at each of the eight lessons in the courses. There had been a marked degree of interest in all the subjects given and it was very satisfactory in view of the present -necessity for maintaining health and efficiency at its highest pitch, that the subjects chosen for 30 of the 41 lectures had been related to diet and healthful living. Those advisory members present then expressed their views that the results of the work had been excellent and that more of it was wanted next year. Miss Macmillan explained that she had already recommended that the Canterbury University College Adult Education Committee should again contribute towards the cost of the A.C.E. to enable the work to be carried on. If this were due she would be happy to make Miss Robins available to work in South Canterbury from early in August until the end of 1941. Before the meeting closed there was a general discussion on suggestions for new study and lecture topics, and for means of helping women to utilise the information given them.
