Competition Match Played Club Tournament Also Held A win in the Temuka Town and Country Tennis Association’s B grade competition was secured by Geraldine who beat Geraldine Flat at Geraldine on Saturday by 11 sets to 5. Results were as follows (.Geraldine names first) : Women’s singles: Miss B. Lysaght beat Miss N. Friend 6-4, Miss H. Richards beat Miss H. Pierce 6-1. Miss J. Gresham beat Miss J. McColl 6-0, Miss M. Gresham beat Miss N. Kelman 6-0. Men’s singles: D. Jones lost to P. Brenton 5-6, H. Bell beat D. Pierce 6-2, H. Lapthorne lost to P. Leary 4-6, A. N. Blakiston beat E. Pierce 6-1. Women’s doubles: Misses Lysaght and Richards beat Misses Friend and Pierce 6-3. Misses J. and M. Greshan beat Misses McColl and Kelman 6-4. Men’s doubles: Jones and Bell beat Brenton and Pierce 6-5, Lapthorne and Blakiston lost to Pierce and Leary 3-6. Combined doubles: Miss Lysaght and Jones lost to Miss Friend and Brenton 2-6, Miss Richards and Bell beat Miss Pierce and Pierce 6-2, Miss J. Gresham and Lapthorne lost to Miss McColl and Leary 6, Miss M. Gresham and Blakiston beat Miss Kelman and Pierce 6-1. “YANKEE" TOURNAMENT A successful “yankee” tournament was conducted by members of the Geraldine Tennis Club at Geraldine on Monday when there were many visitors from neighbouring clubs. Miss J. Turton with 18 points won the women’s section and Miss J. Lapthorne was runner-up with 17 points. In the men’s section, Messrs P. Leary and A. Grayburn tied with 18 points. GROUP SAVINGS SCHEME GOOD RESPONSE MET Nine groups of the National Group Savings Scheme have been formed in the Geraldine borough, according to a statement made yesterday by the Postmaster (Mr F. J. Shearer). Mr Shearer said that the nine groups comprised 120 accounts and would mean a saving of approximately £l2 a week for war purposes by wage earners. These groups are limited at present to business groups with staffs of five or more but opportunity will be given to smaller firms and individuals to join later, xiiis week Mr Shearer will interview a number of staffs in country districts with a view to interesting them in the Group Savings Scheme. Toomey, Geraldine, has returned to Christchurch. Miss Thelma Patrick, Talbot Street, is spending a holiday with Miss F. Phillips, Christchurch. WOMAN BREAKS LEG A broken leg was suffered by Mrs E. Slattery, of Geraldine, last evening when she slipped and fell at her home. NOTES Under the auspices of the Orari Patriotic Committee a presentation will be tendered to Private J. Rooney in the Coronation Hall, Orari, tomorrow, Thursday, dancing beginning at 8.30 p.m. A special general meeting of the Geraldine branch of the Labour Party will be held in the Geraldine Town Hall supper room on Friday night at 8 p.m. The Orari Basketball Club will hold a dance in the Orari Coronation Hall in aid of the soldiers’ parcel fund on Saturday night, November 30. The annual bazaar of the St. Barnabas Guild will be held at “Silverton" by kind permission of Mrs J. M. H. Tripp, on Saturday, November 30, at 2 p.m. where stalls, games and the “Silverton" swimming pool will be amongst the attractions.
