SIXTY PER CENT FIT

Christchurch Reservists By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, November 20. The first week’s medical examinations in Christchurch of men called up in the Second Territorial Ballot produced a fairly high percentage of men graded as fit for service in any part of the world. A total of 582 men attended medical boards during the week, and of these 355 were graded fit, 169 temporarily unfit and 58 permanently unfit. The percentage of fit men is 60.9, compared with an average of between 55 and 56 pel- cent, recorded for the whole of the first ballot. Good progress is being made with the examination of reservists, about 150 attending medical boards each day. The medical boards will be busy for some weeks yet on this task. An officer of the Registration Department said to-day that many were not aware that it was unnecessary for invalids and persons badly incapacitated to attend medical examinations. Such persons, although they would have to be visited by a special medical board later, could be exempted from attendance on forwarding a certificate signed by a Justice of the Peace, clergyman or medical practitioner.
