HOME GUARD
Appeal For Members Comment By Mayor “We admire those who are defying the Nazi air raids in London and throughout England,” said the Mayor, Mr W. G. Tweedy in addressing the large gathering at the official opening of the Timaru Bowling Club on Saturday, “but we have a duty, and it is a definite duty to assist the war effort in a practical manner. “We should be prepared to help,” Mr Tweedy continued. “The Government aims at the mobilisation of the whole of the available resources of the Dominion. We have the opportunity of enlisting in the Home Guard. Enrolment forms have been available for the last fortnight, but, so far, I have been disappointed at the response by the people of Timaru. “It is no use giving lip service—the public must realise that they have a definite responsibility. All males over 16 years of age are eligible and I ask them not only to enrol themselves, but to endeavour to get their friends to do so, so that the Home Guard quota in Timaru is worthy of the town. “I sometimes think that a good many of us, apart from those in the Forces, do not fully realise what the war means,” Mr Tweedy concluded. “A bomb in Stafford Street might do a lot of good! It is very necessary that every man should play his part, so that New Zealand will not be found wanting if any emergency occurs.”
