Engineer’s Report Monthly Meeting To-day The monthly report of the engineer clerk to the Mackenzie County Council. Mr D. During the month 25.000 trees had been planted at Tekapo. The trees planted were 10,000 three-year-old Pinus Larico, 5000 two-year-old European Larch, 5000 two-year-old Pinus Insignus, 3000 two-year-old Dregon, 2000 year-old Pinus Murryana and 100 Silver Birch. In addition to these, trees had also been planted on the roadside at Tekapo and Pukaki. The report also states that there had been quite a fair proportion of the outstanding rates collected. A good response had been received for enrolment in the Home Guard. FREE LIBRARY A report on the working of the Mackenzie County Free Library has been’ prepared by the Librarian, Mrs M. L. West, and will be presented at to-day’s meeting of the County Council. There Is a marked increase in the numbers of readers already and each week shows a further increase. More interest is being taken by residents in the reading room Papers and magazines from Australia and Africa had been received from Mr R. L. Banks for the reading room. All the books in the library have been reclassified and catalogued. Miss Wright of the Wellington Country Service gave valuable service and advice in the classifying of the books. A large number of the older books had been rebound, washed and cleaned. The report states that arrangements i have been made for books to be sent to readers at Cricklewood, Burke’s Pass, Kimbell and Sherwood Downs. Albury has 81 members at the moment. Six hundred books have been sent to the Librarian at the Public Works Department at Tekapo. Most of these books were in need of repair and this work is being done at Tekapo. In response to the appeal for books for the soldiers a large parcel of books has been packed ready to send away. These books have been sent in by residents throughout the county. GOLF CLUB CLOSING DAY The Fairlie Golf Club closed its season on Saturday. There was a good attendance of members and the weather was perfect. Opportunity was taken by Mr J. MacDonald to thank members and supporters for the help they had given the Club during the year. Mr MacDonald said the links had been in good order all through the season, and everyone had enjoyed a good season's play. The trophies won during the season were presented by Mesdames J. Trotter and H. Carlton as follows:—Men’s senior championship, J. MacDonald; men’s junior championship, J. E. Macdonald; knock-out singles, J. E. Macdonald; ringer competition. W. B. Trotter; knock-out mixed foursome, Mrs W. Mackintosh and E. Goodwin; women’s senior championship, Mrs E. J. Robertson; runner-up, Mrs P. J. Carlton; junior championship, Miss P. Collins; runner-up, Mrs J. E. Macdonald; knock-out singles, Mrs G. Berney; runner-up, Mrs J. H. Box; knock-out foursomes, Mrs J. Anniss and Miss E. L. Jones; ringer competition, Mrs J. Anniss (senior). Miss P. Collins (junior), Mrs C. H Miller (C grade); silver L.G.U, Miss E. L. Jones and Mrs Anniss; bronze L.G.U, Mrs H. C. Manaton; drawn partner knock-out foursome, Mrs E. J. Robertson and Mrs C. H. Miller; most improved beginner, Mrs A. G. Sheridan; four best Trotter medal rounds, Mrs A. Fleming. PERSONAL Mr and Mrs A. R. Manchester and Mr W. A. B. Morton spent the weekend in Christchurch. Mrs J. O. Kitching and Miss Thalma Kitching, Kelso, who have been staying with Mrs K. Anderson, have left to visit friends in Timaru.
