FAIRLIE CLUB DEBATE

Annual Fixture Literary Society And Young Farmers The first inter-club debate held in Fairlie this season will take place in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Tuesday night, -he debate is between the Mackenzie Literary and Dramatic Society and the Fairlie Young Farmers’ Club and the subject is “That the United States is justified in not entering actively into the present war.” The affirmative will be taken by the Society, whose team will consist of Messrs J. E. Shears. W. Hanson and E. Grand!. The Young Farmers’ team will be Messrs C. Goulter, Whatman and D. Scott. The judge will be Mr J. F. D. Jeune. Last year when the two organisations debated, the decision was given I to the Young Farmers. On Tuesday ! evening Mr H. E. Carter, of the W.E.A.. will be present and an endeavour will be made to form a discussion circle. In addition to the debate a play is to I be read. SCHOOL SOCIAL A break-up social organised by the pupils of the Fairlie District High School was held in the Parish Hall on Thursday night. The evening was spent in games and dancing. A welcome to the teachers of the school was extended by W. B. McConnell, who also extended best wishes to Miss Cook and Mr A. Campbell, who have been | relieving at Fairlie and who have been transferred to other districts. SONG SERVICE During the term that the Rev. Johnston has been at the St. Columba Presbyterian Church, several successful song services have been hedl. At each of these the congregation has been large, and with the help of the choir the singing has been of a high order. The series will be continued to-morrow evening when special singing will again be the feature of the service. PERSONAL Mr C. H. Miller and Mr A. Campbell left last night for Ashburton. Miss J.
