School Ambulance Children Congratulated “This must be considered as a very creditable effort and even perhaps a record for a school of this size,” said the headmaster (Mr J. J. McGuigan) when reporting that a sum of £5l/9/6 had been raised by the pupils of the Geraldine School for the purchase of an ambulance by schools in Canterbun’, to a meeting of the School Committee on Thursday evening. Mr McGuigan said that the amount raised worked out to over 3 - a pupil, and exceeded the school’s quota of £24/16 - by more than double. Members expressed pleasure at the splendid response by the children in their contribution towards the war effort. The headmaster’s report stated that there was a roll number in the primary department of 245 and 85 in the secondary department. At the invitation of the Geraldine Borough Council the school took part in the Arbor Day ceremony, and the Council had presented a Windsor oak which was planted at the High School. For the next teachers’ refresher course in the Christmas term holidays Geraldine had been mentioned as a possible centre. Mr McGuigan said, and approval was given by the committee. PRESENTATION TO MR FYFE As a memento and in recognition of his 25 years’ service as a chairman and member of the Geraldine School Committee, Mr A. M. Fyfe was met by members of the committee on Thursday evening and presented with a tea set, accessories and pyrex dish from pupils of the school and committee members. In making the presentation the chairman (Mr P. M. McKenzie) referred to the long and valuable service Mr Fyfe had given to the School, and they all felt, he said, that such an occasion could not go unnoticed. Mr Fyfe suitably replied. PUPILS HONOUR TEACHER When pupils of Standards 3 and 4 held an end-of-term picnic at Anderson’s Rocks at Geraldine yesterday, opportunity was taken to present their teacher, Mr Gavin Brown, with a reading lamp. Master Ralph Wylie who made the presentation said they were sorry to lose Mr Brown, and wished him luck in the future. PERSONAL Mr Gavin Brown who has been a teacher at the primary department of the Geraldine District High Schoo] for the past three years will leave to take over his new appointment at the Peel Forest School at the beginning of next term. Also on the programme is a March of Time feature. “Europe’s Propaganda.” It tells how propaganda helps in the winning of a war, and tells for the first time the real story behind the vist of England’s King and Queen to America. GIFT AFTERNOON Dainty and useful were the gifts received by Miss Nancy Dean, whose marriage will take place on August 24 at St. Mary’s Church. Geraldine. The party was given by Miss Nancy Maxwell, “Greenhills,” Kakahu. The rooms were artistically arranged with vases of japonica and spring flowers. Competitions were won by Miss Dean and Miss Doris Lyon. Miss Maxwell sang two vocal numbers. The Orari Basketball Club will hold a dance in the Orari Coronation Hall to-night at 8 o’clock. A Young Farmers’ Inter-Club debate will be held in the Geraldine Toe H Hall on Wednesday, August 21, at 8 p m., between Pleasant Point and Milford, Fairlie and Geraldine. The Peel Forest and Arundel National Party will hold a dance in aid of provincial patriotic funds on Thursday. September 12, in the Arundel Hall.
