WAIMATE SHOPS TO CLOSE

School Excursion To Timaru Unanimous Decision Shops and other business premises in Waimate. with the exception of bakers, will be closed all day to-mor-row for the Primary School excursion to Timaru. The decision was reached unanimously at a meeting of business men yesterday, over which Mr J. C. Winning presided. At first butchers were of the opinion that they would be unable to close, but they were later able to do so. The notice was not long enough for bakers to make the necessary arrangements. Trains will leave Waimate at 9.35 a.m. and 9.53 a.m. and on the return journey will leave Timaru at 5.55 p.m. and 6.25 p.m The first train will be non-stop, and the second will stop at Studholme, Hook and Makikihi Hot water, tea, milk and sugar will be supplied free on the presentation of a railway ticket. Wilson) has been advised by the Canterbury Education Board, in connection with the Board's “Learn to Swim” campaign, that a demonstration will be given at Waimate on Tuesday morning by Mr J. R. Breward, the well-known Christchurch instructor. The letter stated that circulars had been sent to the schools at Hunter, Hook, Waituna Creek, Willowbridge, Douglas, Morven, Grey’s Corner, Nukuroa, Waihao Downs, Tawai, Glenavy, Ikawai and Waimate Convent, and it was hoped that Mr Breward’s visit would arouse sufficient enthusiasm among, teachers, committeemen and parents to*lnduce them to make arrangements for the conveyance of the children to the Waimate baths for instruction. lIANIIAM TO MEET JENKIN Mr W. A. O'Connor has received advice from Stan Jenkin that he will be prepared to meet Cliff Hanham in Waimate shortly after March 4. Before that date, Jenkin, who holds the New Zealand light-heavy and middleweight professional titles, is to fight a welter-weight bout in Wellington. Last November when Hanham met Jenkin, he obtained the decision through the title holder retiring owing to an injury. In the coming fight, one at least of Jenkin’s titles will be at stake. RECRUITING OFFICE Evidently following representations made by the Waimate branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association for a recruiting office in Waimate, advice has now been received that Sergeantmajor Matheson, of Timaru, will be at the Waimate Drill Hall every Friday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. to enrol recruits. It is also hoped that it will be possible to have the recruits examined in Waimate by the Medical Board. PERSONAL The Rev. R. J. Griffiths is visiting Waimate at present. Mr W. E. George has returned from a holiday visit to Australia. Mr and Mrs L J Collins have returned from Wellington. Miss E. Chute, who was to have been on the staff of the Waimate Primary School, is present relieving at the

Nukuroa School. Foi the present her place in Waimate lias been taken by Mr Copland, a supernumerary assistant.

Mr and Mrs A. J. Larnder and family have returned from Hae Hae Te Moana.

Mr J. Henton and M'r B. Bolt, MacAndrew Bay, Dunedin, have returned home after being the guests of Mi G. Pre van, Waihao Fcrks. Sister R. and J Glorenshaw, Ai\io, are visiting Wellington ?r.d Palmerston North. Mrs G. Provan, Waihao Forks, has returned from Christchurch.
