GERALDINE DAMAGE BY GALE

POWER AND TELEGRAPH LINES BROKEN Power and telegraph lines were damaged in parts of the Geraldine district on Wednesday when several trees came down with the gale. On the main south highway at Geraldine two huge poplars fell across the main power line and blocked the road to traffic for a short time. A considerable length of line was damaged at Hilton by a tree. The lights in the Geraldine Town Hall failed in the afternoon where the Geraldine Horticultural Society staged the flower and vegetable sections of their annual show. RANGERS MEET Captain (Miss E. L. J. Davies) and Lieutenant N. Kehnan, paraded at the first meeting of the Geraldine Ranger Company this year. The following patrol leaders were elected: Misses J. Ford, A. Kelman, J. Lapthorn and E. King. New members welcomed were Misses Hazel Brown, June Carroll, Lydia Morgan, Fleurette Simmonds and Averil Bailey. A welcome was also extended to Miss Eileen King, a former Geraldine ranger. JANUARY RAINFALL In comparison with January, 1939, the rainfall for last month was con- j siderably higher, 2.21 inches being recorded by Mr B. R. Macdonald at “Waitui.” For the corresponding month last year only 57 points of rain were recorded, being the lightest since records were kept. Rain fell on six days last month with a maximum fall on the 13th of I.oBin. TENNIS The following will represent Geraldine to play Aorangi in Timaru tomorrow: —Messrs A. Steward, R. Gibson, A. N. Blakiston, H. Lapthorn and Misses E. L. J. Davies, C. M. Hislop, P. Harper and Mrs W. Webb. CRICKET The team to play Star at Geraldine to-morrow has been selected as follows:—E. E. Scott, Fitzgerald, J. Stack, C. A. Mayston, E. Ambler, F. Stack, S. Williams, W. S. Parr, E. Pierce, C. S. Davies and, E. Pierce. PERSONA A motion of sympathy with the Rule family was carried in silence at the Women’s Institute. Mrs J. Robertson, Talbot Street, is visiting Wellington and is the guest of Mrs W. A. Scott, Strathmore Avenue. THE MIKADO Based upon the opera by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. The Mikado will be screened at the Geraldine Municipal Theatre to-night and to-morrow night at 8.15 p.m. The picture presents the first Gilbert and Sullivan opera to be screened. Leading parts are taken by Kenny Baker as Nanki-Poo and Jean Colin as YumYum and Martyn Green Ko-Ko. The Mikado is portrayed by John Barclay.
