If winners of races could be found by mathematical calculations, it could easily be demonstrated that Thermidor should defeat all the other South Islanders in the Wellington Cup. But in a scramble such as to-day’s race is likely to be, figures are likely to be confounded. There are indications that Beau Vite will be favourite, yet it is easy to prove on paper that he has no chance. He is required to concede 131 b to Fils de Vaals, but there was not that between their performances in the Great Northern Derby. Then Fil de Vaals is required to concede Beau Repaire 71b for a head defeat at Auckland, and on cold figures Beau Repaire has a pull on both Beau Vite and Fils de Vaals, while Gladynev appeals more than any of the three named. It is doubtful if there was ever a greater gamble in any race in the Dominion than in today’s Wellington Cup. Mr Charles Wheeler, of Adelaide, who (as agent) bid two thousand guineas for a Bulandshar colt at yesterday’s sales nearly topped the bidding last year, when he went to 1400gns for a Siegfried-Lilock colt which went to Mr John Wren. The only higher price given in 1939 was 1450gns for a Tide-race-My Own colt which went to J. T. Jamieson’s stable. Two years ago Mr Wheeler bought a Siegfried-Lilock colt (named Wilson) for 1050gns, the only higher figure being 1150gns paid by Mr T. H. Lowry for a filly by Beau Pere from Drama.
