CENTENNIAL CUP

To-day’s Highlight At Trentham Fine Field Engaged The Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting, featured by the £3OOO Centennial Cup, will commence to-day. Fields in most events threaten to be embarrassingly large, and luck will play a big part in the racing. Betting will be transacted on the win and place system. Provided they escape misfortune, the following should be prominent:— Trentham Highweight Locklt, Raana, The Ring. Wellington Stakes— Absolve, Doria. Apprentices’ Plate—Wings of Song, Not Out, Lady Tinkle. Fitzherbert Handicap— Don’t Forget, Chary, Phaleron Song. Wellington Cup— Gladynev, Old Bill, Thermidor. Ruapehu Handicap— Autolite, Phenomenal, Desert Sun. Telegraph Handicap Bronwen, Amigo, Arvakur. Anniversary Handicap Dictate, Rarotonga, Baran. The card is as follows: 12.12 p.m.

It is pretty well known that Mr J. B. Reid lost the £5OO first prize in the Wellington Cup on a protest based on the fact that Gladsome’s rider, F. D. Jones had no permit to ride, but not so many people are familiar with the fact that he forfeited £350 in connection with the Racing club Handicap. The owner of Convoy, who finished second in each race, lodged the objections, and although they were dismissed by the Wellington Racing Club they were upheld on an appeal to the Conference. The rule requiring an apprentice to hold a permit to ride in races had not long been in operation, and it had been overlooked by Jones’s employer, R. J. Mason. Gladsome had just previously won the Great Northern Derby and the Auckland Plate with Jones up, but in these cases the owners who would have profited, Sir G. Clifford and Mr S. Bradley, refrained from protesting.
