J RETIREMENT CAUSES RELIEF “AVENGING SWORD OF REVOLUTION” ' United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright . (Received December 10, 12.20 a.m.) MOSCOW, December 9. The public is relieved by the dismissal of the ruthless O.G.P.U. Chief, Nikolai Yezhoff, "the avenging sword of revolution,” the greatest purge expert, in favour of M. Stalin’s fellow Georgian, Laurent! Beria. This is believed to portend a change in police methods, though the cessation of repressive measures is unlikely. Yezhoff, who is tubercular, ostensibly resigned for health reasons, but he is not completely out of favour because he retains his membership in the political bureau and control commission. He succeeded Yagoda, who was shot as a traitor. Beria is scholarly and is generally popular.
