MAY BE REMOVED
POPLARS ON MAIN HIGHWAY That the poplars planted on the Timaru-Christchurch main highway along the road reserve might have to be removed at the expense of the Levels County Council was the text of a letter from Mr F. Langbein. Canterbury representative on the Highways Board. Receiving the letter at its meeting yesterday, the Levels County Council decided to send a copy of the letter to the Timaru Rotary Club which sponsored the scheme of planting. It had been noticed that in beautifying the Christchurch-Timaru State highway along the road reserve several poplar trees had been planted at frequent intervals, stated the letter from Mr Langbein. The planting of trees of that type was not regarded favourably by the Department. Wherever trees were planted along the highways they should be of the slow growing variety. The Department might insist that the poplars be removed at any time it considered they became a danger to traffic and it might require the Council to remove the trees at its own expense.
