ROWING

THE SPORT IN TIMARU (By “Seas”). The season promises to be a good one. About 17 new members is encouraging, and all are showing keenness in their training. The draw for the Elementary fours is as follows: Ramsay v. O’Hara. DeClifford v. McDonald. Hutchinson v. Crisp. Lennon, a bye. The first race is at 6.15 on Monday. Two new strokes for this race are E. Crisp and K. Hutchinson. A word to strokes: Do not try to teach new members too much at once. First concentrate on the blade; see that it is well turned over; then the lean-back before the leg drive. Anything more will confuse. If you wish to keep the crew keen the first thing is to insist on members turning up on time to train. Nothing kills interest more quickly than waiting about. I would suggest to members that they take a glance through the “Boat Entry Book” and take note of the crews that have trained the most, and then wait and see which crews go into the finals.

It Is pleasing to see members taking an interest in the appearance of the sheds, and when the work being done to the skids is complete, things will look shipshape. An idea that may be worth trying: I would like to see on Monday evening the following crew give a demonstration so as to give new members an idea of the style to aim at: V. Hargraves (s), C. DeClifford, W. Davies, W. Woods. A row to the mouth and back would be sufficient.

New Members! Remember when you race that the course for this race is five-eighths of a mile and that it is necessary to judge your staying power. Do not use up all your strength at the beginning.
