WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

*ORARI Mrs W. Hughes presided at the monthly meeting of the Orari Women’s Institute. Miss N. Gerrard has taken over the secretaryship and Mrs W. Shutt is treasurer. Mrs C. H. E. Gerard and Miss W. Gerard read very interesting letters fom Trumpington. Mis V. Bowker gave an Instructive address on gardening which was much appreciated by all. Competitions resulted.—Bowl of flowers: Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald 1, Mrs W. Watson 2, Mrs V. Bowker 3. Single bloom: Mrs V. Bowker 1, Mrs LeCren and Mrs H. Williams (equal) 2. Decorated jellies: Mrs F. Hughes 1 and 2. Institute members took gifts to Miss Lily Cone for her approaching marriage. BLUECLIFFS The monthly meeting of the Bluecliffs Women’s Institute was presided over by the president, Mrs G. W. Cocks. The resignation of Mrs W. Squire as secretary was received with regret. Mrs Ward delegate to Waimate Federation and flower show gave a very interesting account of these gatherings. Mrs Woodhouse gave a very instructive account of homespun wool and the dying of it and was accorded a vote of thanks. The hostesses for the day were Mrs G. W. Cocks, Mrs C. Cartwright and Mrs Woodhouse. Competitions results were.—Senior class, rhubarb: Mrs G. W. Cocks 1, Mrs T. Squire 2 and 3. Lettuce: Mrs R. Cartwright 1. Meat shape: Mrs R. J. Fletcher presided over a fair attendance at the October meeting of the Willowbridge Women’s Institute. The roll-call, “My Pet Aversion in Housework,” proved cleaning the range an unpopular task for most of the members. The motto for the day was “One is never too old to feel young." Two new members were enrolled. Mrs W. Fletcher and Mrs 8. J. Richmond gave a detailed report on the council meeting recently held in Waimate, Miss A. Faulkner moving a vote of thanks to the speakers. Mrs W. J. Fletcher was appointed delegate to the meeting at Makikihi in November to form a new Federation. Mrs W. J. Fletcher’s demonstration on “smocking” proved most interesting, and a vote of thanks was accorded her.

Further arrangements were made for the Institute’s bay at the A. and P. Show in Waimate next month. The competitions resulted:—Decorated basket, Miss A. Faulkner 1, Mrs 8. J. Richmond 2; specimen bloom, Mrs W. J. Fletcher and Mrs W. Smith (equal) 1, Miss A. Faulkner 3; hairpin work, Mrs S. J. Richmond 1, Mrs W. T. Richmond 2, Mrs W. Smith 3; date and walnut loaf, Mrs 8. T. Richmond 1, Mrs W. Smith and Mrs 8. J. Richmond (equal) 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs W. T. Richmond and Mrs B. Richardson.
