WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

ESK VALLEY The third annual meeting of the Esk Valley Women’s Institute was held in the school. Mrs Bishop presided over a good attendance of members. Mesdames Hazelburg and Chamberlain were welcomed as visitors. It was decided to send two delegates' to the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Federation in Geraldine. Mrs Bishop and Miss Molly Toohey being appointed. Miss Grace Sauer was appointed delegate to the Dominion Conference in Wellington. The secretary, Mrs L. Mills, gave a very comprehensive report on the year’s work, stating that it was mainly owing to the untiring energy of the president (Mrs Bishop) that the year had been so successful and happy and th credit balance so satisfactory. Before moving the adoption of the reports Mrs Bishops thanked the secretary for her valuable co-operation and all who had helped in any way. Artistic bouquets made by Mrs Copland were presented to Mrs Bishop. Mrs L. Mills (secretary), and Mrs W. E. Mills (Group convener). As only the required number of members were nominated for the committee the following were elected: Mesdames Coup, Copland, Morrison, Tacker, L. Mills and Bishop, Miss Roberts. Mrs Bishop was unanimously re-elected president. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr L. R. Bishop who audited the books, and was again nominated as auditor for the ensuing year. Mr Morrison reported that the competitions for the year had resulted as follows.—Premier bloom: Mrs Bishop. Artistic arrangement of cut flowers: Mrs Copland and Mrs Bishop equal. Cookery: Mrs Morrison. Sewing: Miss G. Sauer.

It was unanimously decided to give one guinea to the school committee for the use of the school. Mrs Copland agreed to commence the Institute book on the history of Esk Valley.

Members were notified about the forthcoming group show and drama festival. Mrs Coup was appointed "Home and Country” agent. It was decided that each member should give a three minute talk at monthly meetings.

An amusing competition was won by Mrs Packer.

The premier bloom competition resulted as follows.—Mrs Copland (dahlia) 1, Misses I. and M. Copland (dahlias) equal 2, Mrs Graham (dahlia) 3.

The committee were hostesses for the afternoon.

At a short meeting of the committee later, Mrs Coup was appointed president and Mrs L. Mills secretary. Mrs Morrison was appointed to take charge of competitions.
