BRITISH POLICY IN PALESTINE

FRESH GESTURES OF' GOOD WILL

HINTS OF MODIFICATION OF NEW PLAN United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 6, 0.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 5. The political correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” points out that the phraseology of the White Paper is sufficiently wide to allow the Government to put an almost entirely new plan before the Mandates Commission of the League if the new Palestine Commission thinks advisable. It Is pointed out that the Government is most anxious to expedite the inquiry, and the members of the commission will doubtless be at work in Palestine before the end of March. The newspapers, commenting on the new commission, point out that this will be a fact-finding body, and attention is drawn to the terms of reference which empower it to suggest modifications of the previous Royal Commission's plans, including the variation of the areas recommended for retention under the British mandate. REACTION TO BRITISH DECISION JEWISH CIRCLES INTERESTED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, January 5. The Jerusalem correspondent of “The Times" reports that the British Government’s White Paper has been coldly received in Palestine, although Jewish circles, which feared abandonment of the partition project, are most relieved to find that this principle is still maintained.

The Arabs profess indifference towards the Technical Commission’s visit, contending that the time occupied by inquiries will only result in further entanglement of the Palestine position.
