INCREASE IN EMPLOYMENT British Official Wireless (Received January 6, 6.30 p.m.) RUGBY, January 5. The Ministry of Labour estimates, that on December 13, 1937, the number of insured persons in employment in Britain, exclusive of persons within the agricultural scheme was approximately 11,437,000. This is 136,000 less than a month before, but 200,000 more than a year before. At the same date, the unemployed totalled 1,665,407, comprising 1,283,604 wholly unemployed, 324,779 temporarily laid off, and 56,024 normally In casual employment. This is 166,204 more than a month before, but is a decrease of 51,000 on the year before in the numbers of wholly unemployed, including casuals, but an increase of about 143 in the numbers temporarily laid off. The railways traffic totals for 1937, aggregated £164,062,000, an increase of £7,106,000 on 1936.
