A SURPRISE DEFEAT By Telegraph—Press Association NEW PLYMOUTH, January 6. The surprise of the day at the opening of the North Island tennis championships was the defeat cf Miss Nessie Beverley, New Zealand second ranking player, by Miss O. J. Taylor, of New Plymouth, after a gruelling three sets. Other prominent competitors at the tournament, which will conclude on Saturday, are N. G. Sturt (Auckland), present singles champion, A. D. Brown. J. T. Mayson, J. W. Gunn, all of Auckland, and Misses M. Beverley (Waikato) and B. Bishop (Auckland.), none of whom was troubled to win in the opening round of matches.
