ASHBURTON BEATS SOUTH CANTERBURY When South Canterbury resumed batting in the Minor Association’s match against Ashburton the wicket was in good order and the weather gloriously fine. The outfield was, however, still slow. Heasley eleven and Pateman twelve quickly carried the score to 53, when Pateman was out to a good catch at mid-on. Gould the incomer, after a shaky start, defended stubbornly and helped Heasley who was batting very well, to add 56. When the score was 109 Gould stepped out to one from Harper, a slow leg-break bowler, and was smartly stumped by Cook. Kane and Heasley carried on and in the last over before lunch Heasley was out l.b.w. to Duncan. He had batted very well, punishing anything loose on the off. He gave one chance, being dropped in the long field when 45. The rest of the batsmen did not last long, Kane going when attempting a big hit. Being 113 runs behind on the first innings South Canterbury had to follow on. They again opened disasterously, Earwaker going in the first over, caught behind the wicket. Chaplin started well but when only three he missed a full toss from Harper and was bowled. Lang seemed to be getting set when he missed one from Biggar and the score was 13-3-7. Pateman joined Heasley and the pair proceeded to score quickly. In one over from Todd Pateman hit four fours in succession. When the score was 53 Pateman swung at a full toss from Harper, missed and was out leg-before. Gould did not last long, being caught at mid-on by Biggar. As in the first innings Heasley played a fine knock and saved the side from collapse. When the score was 74 he was bowled by Todd. Stack hit out aggressively and when the total was 83 he was bowled by Harper in attempting a big hit. Kane and Knowles then made a brief stand of 26. In one over from Todd Kane hit a six and a four. In the last over before afternoon tea, Knowles was out l.b.w. to Duncan. The score was then 109. Soon after resuming Kane was out and bowled by Harper. Rix did not last long and the side was out for 114.
