REGATTA CONCLUDES

RESULTS OF CUP RACES The final of the three races for the Caroline Bay Association’s Cup was decided on Sunday afternoon and resulted in Tamara, a visiting vessel from the Waimakariri Club, annexing the trophy, with 514 points. Two of the local boats, Yvonne (459 points) and Sea Spray (430 points) were second and third respectively. Tamara, an orthodox design IdleAlong, Marconi rigged with sliding backstays, was built by C. Kitson, who also built the local 18-footer Anita. Mystery 11, also a visiting Idle-Along, was unlucky to break her jib halliard in the final race when she was in a good position with sufficient points to win the cup had she gained a place. Sixteen boats competed in the third cup race and were sent away to a flying start at 2.30, six boats crossing the line together with Alice in the lead. There was a strong easterly, while the sea was fairly rough. Soon after the. start Alerte fouled Huia, the latter losing valuable seconds, which allowed Mystery I and Yvonne to gain a commanding position. Mystery I and 11, Huia and Yvonne fought out the first round together, Mystery I rounding first with Yvonne, Huia, Mystery II and Tamara in that order. On the next round Yvonne w'eathered Mystery I, which had a dogfight with Huia. Tamara was in close attendance and it was at this stage that Mystery II had to retire. The order of rounding the second time was Yvonne, Mystery I, Huia and Tamara, with Anita making up lost ground after a bad start. The rest of the fleet was strung out with each crew striving hard to win on handicap. On the last round Hula weathered Mystery I but was unable to beat Yvonne, which was home first from Huia by six seconds. Mystery I and Tamara were close up, with Anita next. On corrected times Mystery I, sailed by A. Tyson, was first, with Tamara, Alice and Yvonne next.

The results on corrected times were:— Mystery I, A. E. Tyson, Christchurch (12min), ihr 3min 48sec 1 Tamara, C. Kitson, Christchurch (Bmin), Ihr 7min lOsec 2 Alice, W. Baillie, Timaru (13min), Ihr 9min 13sec , 3 Yvonne, D. Riddler, Timaru (3min), Ihr lOmin 15sec .. .. .. .. .. 4 The Second Race The second cup race was held on Saturday afternoon in a fine northeast breeze with a moderate sea. Shortly after the start Alerte broke her bobstay and retired. The three placed boats were the only ones to take advantage of local conditions, standing into Evans Bay on the beat to windward. Ida, a visiting Snipe, was first home, followed by Sea Spray and Yvonne, with Huia close up. Wee May retired leaking badly, while Zita and Kestrel were disqualified for fouling buoys.

The results on corrected times were:— Ida, A. L. Penn, Christchurch (20 min), Ihr 35min 15sec 1 Sea Spray, W. Alexander, Timaru (21min), Ihr 40min 51sec 2 Yvonne, R. Baillie, Timaru (smin), Ihr 43min 41sec 3 Huia, W. Holmsley, Canterbury (2 min), Ihr 44min 47sec 4 A sweepstake race was held on Sunday morning over a course of two rounds. There was a moderate easterly breeze and the race resulted in a win for Mystery I (9sec), with Yvonne (3Jscc) and Squib (3sec) next in order. The Ladies’ Race for a trophy presented by Miss M. Prosser, was won by the Yvonne, with Miss B. Taylor at the tiller, the Anita being second, with Miss E. C. Odell as skipper. Cup Presented The regatta terminated with a very pleasant function, when the Caroline Bay Association’s Cup was presented to the winning boat, the Idle-Along Tamara (Messrs C. Kitson skipper, E. Nules crew) of the Waimakariri Sailing and Power Boat Club. The Commodore of the Timaru Club (Mr A. E. A. Watkins) apologised for the poor weather, but was confident that the visitors had had an enjoyable time.

The skipper, Mr Kitson, in responding, said that they had so enjoyed themselves, that they fully intended to come again.
