OTAGO SET A TASK

AUCKLAND PUTS ON 457 By Telegraph--Press Association AUCKLAND, January 3. ■ The second day’s play in the Plunket Shield cricket match between Auckland and Otago at Eden Park to-day saw Auckland gain a commanding lead. Auckland scored 457 in the first innings, leaving Otago 199 to make to avoid an Innings defeat. Otago replied by scoring 30 runs without loss. The outstanding performance of the day was the last wicket partnership between Carson and Cowie, which realised 119 runs. Auckland’s large total was largely due to centuries by Carson and Whitelaw, who were associated in a record second wicket partnership of 445 against Otago in 1936. Each batsman scored 108, Carson be-

ing not out. For Otago Silver took four wickets for 97 runs. Scores:—
