PLUNKET SHIELD GAMES WELLINGTON BEATS CANTERBURY SOUTHERNERS MAKE POOR SHOWING By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, January 3. In more than two and a half hours' play short of two days, the Plunket Shield cricket match between Canterbury and Wellington was all over at the Basin Reserve to-day, Wellington securing a hollow victory by six wickets. The match began on Friday when Canterbury scored 197 and Wellington at stumps had lost nine wickets for 206. Resuming this morning, the Wellington total was carried to 231. Canterbury collapsed in their second innings for 99 against brilliant bowling by Pritchard (four for 18), Gallichan (three for 29), Rice (two for 17), and Wilson (one for 21). Cromb, the Canterbury captain, played a good fighting knock for 39. Though only requiring 66 to win, Wellington lost four wickets in getting them. Ell played a bright innings for 32 and Tindlll shaped confidently for 25 not out. It was one of the feeblest batting displays even seen in a Plunket Shield match, as in less than two days 34 wickets fell for 593 runs.
