TEMUKA

COMMUNITY SING QUEEN CARNIVAL EFFORT A community sing, the first to be held in Temuka for many years, led by Mr James Buckler, of Christchurch, with Mr Frank Squires at the piano, was held in the Elite Theatre, the funds being to augment the Basketball Queen’s candidature. There was a packed house. A welcome from the town to the visitors was extended by the Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan), who said it was pleasing to see the Basketball Queen Committee taking the initiative in arranging a community sing. He said they had been fortunate to secure two such able leaders as Mr Buckler and Mr Squires. The Basketball Queen (Miss Dorothy Bisdee) was presented by the president of the Association, Mr H. F. Christie. Mr Christie thanked the public for attending in such large numbers and said that their Queen Committee would not rest until Miss Bisdee was placed at the top of the poll. The programme presented was a well varied one, the singing being interspersed with several solo items. A solo “In a Tiny Garden,” given by Mrs Buckler, was very popular, the singer being recalled. Another solo “Sweet Mystery of Life,” was sung by Mr R. Opie. The Arowhenua Huirapa Glee Club gave several Maori tiems. During the evening an auction sale of cakes, produce and Maori works of art, realised a satisfactory sum. SWIMMING LOCAL SEASON OPENS Members of the Temuka Swimming Club held their first weekly club swim at the Domain Baths on Tuesday evening. J. The women members of the committee are working to secure volunteers to assist in the camp and up to the present there has been a ready response.
