BENEFIT CONCERT SAVAGE CLUB The Waimate Hospital radio fund will benefit by almost £2O as a result of a concert staged in the Olympia Hall on Tuesday evening by the Waimate Savage Club. There was an excellent attendance of the public which showed keen appreciation of the programme presented by the Savages. At the conclusion of the programme, Mr Alan Grant, chairman of the Hospital Committee, expressed appreciation of the Club’s efforts to augment the radio fund and complimented the performers on the programme provided. Great Chief N. L. Knell suitably replied. The programme was as follows: Overture, orchestra under Savage C. E. Manchester; vocal duet. Warriors R. G. Sawell and J. G. Menzies; violin solos, Savage J. Mack; Scotch songs, Savage J. Borthwick; sketch, “The Perfect Memory,” Ex-Great Chief S. Grut, Chief Scribe B. S. Runciman, Scalphunter J. Larnder and Warrior G. Aitken; vocal trios, Savages C. Stanford, C. Thornton, Warrior J. Bowron; euphonium solo, Savage Stent; vocal quartette, Ex-Great Chiefs W. Black and L. J. Collins, Brave R. G. Shackleton and Warrior G. Aitken; vocal solos, Savage H. C. Foster; character sketches, Ex-Great Chief D. Newall; dramatic sketch, "The Golf House Mystery,” Ex-Great Chief T. W. Wylie, Brave R. G. Shackleton, Chief Scribe B. S. Runciman, Warrior R. G. Sawell and Savages M. King and G. H. O. Barclay.

WAITUNA INSTITUTE BIRTHDAY PARTY Mrs W. P. Wilson presided over a good attendance of members and visitors from the district Institutes at the tenth birthday party of the Waituna Women’s Insltute held in the Methodist Hall yesterday. Four new members were welcomed. A play, “A Bargain Sale,” was acted by members of the Drama League. After afternoon tea had been served, the president (Mrs Wilson) lit and named the candles of the birthday cake. The new year was named “sincerity.” The secretary, Mrs V. Barnard then cut the cake, which was d'spensed by the group convener, Mrs ?. Grant, and the vice-presidents, Mrs W. Clarke and Mrs M. Friel. Songs were contributed by Miss K. Fltzmaurice, Miss J. Hooper, Mrs H. L. Richards, and dances by Miss M. Leonard’s pupils, and Misses Noreen Eathorne and Plyllis Wilce. Miss G. Palmer acted as accompaniste. On behalf of the district Institutes and the Women’s Division, Farmers’ I' ion, the various representatives congratulated the Waituna Institute on attaining its tenth birthday and hoped to be with it when the twenty-first birthday was celebrated. Mrs G. Dash was the winner of the lucky seat.

Ikawai, at Ikawai. • GENERAL The new counters and sorting boxes are to be installed at the Waimate Post Office during the week-end. The remodelling work is expected to be finished about the second week in December, if sufficient labour 1- available. The report on the Borough water ,U"ply which the Council some time ago instructed the Town Clerk to draw up is to be placed before the Water Committee this evening and will oe considered by the Council on Tuesday.

The Borough Council staff is at present engaged in top-dressing footpaths ir Rhodes Itreet. The dry spell has had an adverse effect on the young trees in Knottingly Park. The recent fall of rain was too light to bring much Improvement. The new motor mower ordered by the Borough Council arrived on Tuesday and is now in commission. PERSONAL Mrs J. J. Healey, Belt Street, returned home yesterday after spending a fortnight’s holiday with her son, Mr T. F. Healey, of Westport. Mr J. Sauer has returned from a visit to Wellington. “Procter’s,” the opticians. Christchurch. will be making their next professional visit to Waimate on Wednesday and Thursday, Bth and 9th December, when they may he consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Royal Hotel. Appointments can now oe made by ringing the Royal Hotel ('Phone No 15). ..
