Sentencing Alick Bannerman, aged 61 years, to eight years’ imprisonment, Judge Markell described him as a fiend, who behaved like a savage animal. Bannerman went to the home of Mrs Dorothy Houghton, at Mosman, seeking gardening work, and when she turned away he knocked her down and kicked her into insensiblUty. Bannerman did the same thing with her four-year-old son, and their lives were despaired of for three weeks. Fourteen stitches were Inserted in the woman’s face and 100 in her son’s face, resulting in the permanent disfigurement of the child. Bannerman expressed regret. He said his only explanation was that he was a wine drinker, ai he was unable to control himself.
