GERALDINE

SWIMMING CLUB PAST YEAR REVIEWED The following report will be presented to the annual meeting of members of the Geraldine Swimming Club this evening.—

The installation of a piped water supply for the baths at a cost of £250 was the main feature of the 1936-37 season of the Geraldine Swimming Club. The work was carried out by relief labour, under the supervision of Mr G. E. Berry, the borough foreman. An energetic sub-committee was responsible for raising funds, and the public gave It generous support. The Geraldine County Council made a liberal Hobson Trust grant, and the Geraldine Borough Council lent their foreman to supervise the work.

Little was carried out In the way of swimming activities, the baths being closed from December 21 owing to the paralysis epidemic restrictions. The appointment of a permanent caretaker was discussed, but, as no funds were available for the purpose, a temporary voluntary system of supervisiion for Saturday afternoons was organised. Preliminary arrangements were made for a ‘learn to swim' week, but this had to be abandoned with the closing of the baths. The year commenced with a credit of £l5/17//9, and ended with a credit of £4/6/5. The loss of over £lO on the season is-due to the fact that no subscriptions were collected, and costs in connection with the raising of funds for the water scheme were a charge against the general account. The water scheme account discloses a debit of £72/19/2, and a new outlet has to be provided at a cost of about £lB. There Is still, however, £9O to come from the Hobson Trust fund over a period of about 10 years. The club will have to service the interest on the overdraft in the meantime. The allocation of funds from the recent queen carnival will give the club an additional £2B/10/- for improvements. It will probably be best to use this as a nucleus of a fund for women’s dressing sheds, with the appointment of a women's committee to raise the amount to about £lOO before building. In the meantime, the money can be placed in the water account to save interest. Thanks are due to all those who have worked for the club, to those who have given donations and to the Timaru newspapers for very full pubcity.
