RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE MEETS At a meeting of the Committee of the Waimate branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association those present were: Messrs G. H. O. Barclay (president), J. King, A. W. Lewis, W. Barry, C. Smith, A. Kearton, A. Lyall and H. C. Johnston. General headquarters wrote stating that in the event of an agreement between the Hospital Committee and the R.S.A. on the hospital bed scheme there should be a proviso that the agreement is subject to it being in harmony with the scheme adopted by the Government.

The president reported that he had interviewed Mr W. G. Paul, who had advised that it was intended to arrange a round table conference between the Association and representatives of the Hospital Committee with the object of discussing the scheme. Messrs King and Lewis were appointed hospital visitors for the month. The secretary reported that there were at date 110 financial members compared with 246 at April 30 last. Messrs Barclay, Lewis, Smith and King were appointed an Emergency Committee.

It was resolved to procure 1500 small poppies from the Christchurch R.S.A. for next Poppy Day. A discussion ensued on the difficulty of men getting away from their work to form firing parties at military’ funerals, and the opinion was expressed that it may be necessary to eliminate firing parties from future military funerals. STUDHOLME GYMKHANA At annual meeting of the Studholme Gymkhana Committee the following officers were elected: Patrons, Messrs W. Lindsay, J. Foley, sent., and J. H. Mitchell; president, Mr F. J. Henshaw; senior vice-president, Mr J. Borthwich; junior vice-president, Mr F. C. Rollinson; hon. secretary, Mr E. Rollinson; hon. assistant secretary, Mr A. Hayman; trustees, Messrs P. Hunter and E. Rollinson; auditor, Mr Owens. Mr J. Foley, junr., advised that his paddock would again be available. It was decided to hold the gymkhana on January 3.

ACCIDENT Slipping on the pavement in Queen Street, Mrs George Chang struck her head in falling against an iron verandah post, and rolled into the gutter in an unconscious condition. After medical aid had been summoned Mrs Chang was taken to hospital. PERSONAL Miss Alison Mackenzie, of Hook, who has left for Napier to take up nursing, was the recipient of three presentations recently. Mr H. Henderson, on behalf of the Tennis Club, presented her with a hat-box, fruit plate and knife. For the W- nen’s Division, the president, Mrs R. Todd, presented the guest with a fountain pen; while the Sunday School and congregation of Knox Church, through the Rev. Griffiths, made her a gift of a toilet set. The choir of the Knox Presbyterian Church made a presentation to Mrs J. K. Clarke who is leaving the district, to take up residence in Pleasant Point. She was the recipient of an electric hot water iug. Mr S. H.
