COUNT OF BRITAIN’S UNEMPLOYED
CHANGE IN SYSTEM OF RECORDING
SUBSTANTIAL DECREASE SHOWN

The method of taking the count of the unemployed in Britain has been revised, and the latest figures are compiled on the new basis, allowance being made in comparisons with earlier dates. The revision was undertaken with a view to ensuring greater accuracy. The Ministry of Labour provisionally estimates at September 13 the number of Insured persons in employment in Britain, exclusive of persons within the agricultural scheme, was approximately 11,599,000. On a comparable basis there was a decrease of about 7.000 compared with a month before, but an increase of about 473,000 compared with a year before. At the same date the number of registered unemployed was 1,339.204, comprising 1,090.967 wholly unemployed, 191,737 temporarily laid off, and 56.500 normally in casual employment. On a comparable basis, there was an increase of about 30.000. compared with a month before, but a decrease of 236,000 compared with the year before. The total included 1,034,809 men, 39,893 boys, 222,905 women, and 41,697 girls.
