COMPETITION WON BY SOUTHERN OTHER GAME DRAWN Southern won the Mackenzie SubUnion’s Rugby competition for the second time in succession by defeating Cave at Albury on Saturday afternoon by 8 points to 3. Saturday’s games conclude the competition series. Even though Southern was definitely in the lead in the last round, the position could have been altered by the final games. Both Southern and Cave were fairly evenly matched, and the absence of several players in the Country-Town fixture in Timaru was noticeable. J. Simpson, a veteran forward, showed up well in the home side, and G. Woods also played a good game. In the Cave team, the leading forwards were P. Gay and N. McVey, and J. Calder was outstanding in the backs. I Simpson opened the Southern score with a penalty kick taken in front of the posts, and the other points were added when G. Woods picked up out of a ruck and went over for Simpson to convert. The Cave score was obtained by F. Phillips, the second fiveeighths, who took a pass and dodged through the opposing backs to put the ball down 10 yards inside the line. Dewar’s kick missed. Mr T. O’Sullivan was referee. Fairlie 3 v. Aorangi 3. Aorangi and Fairlie drew with three points each in the senior match at Fairlie. The display was regarded as the worst seen during the season, chiefly owing to the bad state of the ground, ;nud being several inches deep. The opinion was expressed that the Sub-Union emergency committee should have cancelled both the junior and the senior fixture. Flay was almost entirely made up of individual work, and players who put up creditable performances under very difficult conditions were E. B. Taylor, J. Edge (forwards), V. Dobson and J. Riddle in the Aorangi team, and on the Fairlie side, A. Crampton, R. Crampton (forwards), I. Watson and A. P. Kane (backs). Fast forward following up in the first half gave Edge an opportunity to score for Aorangi, and in the second half, R. O’Reilly made a good individual effort for Fairlie, dribbling the ball over the line and falling on it. Mr W. L. Bourn controlled the game. In the junior match, Fairlie defeated Aorangi by 15 points to nil. Tries were scored by V. Woods (2), E. Crichton and J. Gallen. E. Bloxham kicked a penalty goal. Mr H. Saunders was referee.
