PLAY IN INTER-ZONE FINAL United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received July 18, 10.40 p.m.) LONDON, July 17. The inter-zone final of the Davis Cup contest to decide the team to meet Britain in the challenge round on July 24, 26 and 27 was commenced to-day, when Germany, winners of the European zone met the United States, winners of the American zone at Wimbledon. Results are as follow: G. von Cramm (Germany) defeated B. M. Grant (United States), 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. J. D. Budge (United States) defeated H. Heenkel (Germany), 6-2, 6-1, 6-3. Von Cramm and Grant made a dour beginning, each testing out the other. The German was the more aggressive and increased his severity in the second set. His only uncertainty was his backhand. The German relentlessly increased his mastery, outwitted the American, and swept to victory. Budge and Henkel opened a long range duel. Budge was a definite master of strokes, whereas footfaulting unsteadied the German. Budge’s stroke supremacy was always manifest except against Henkel’s occasional lightning aces. Henkel’s best patch was in the third set but he lacked consistency in length. His smashing was an antidote to Budge's tantalising lobs.
