WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

GLEN ITI On Tuesday afternoon in the Gleniti School room, which was artistically’ decorated with evergreens and chrysanthemums, the Glen-iti Women's Institute held its fourth birthday party. Mrs Finlay (president) welcomed all present and hoped all would have a happy afternoon. Tire programme was as follows.— Pianoforte duet, Mrs Mangas and Miss B. Mangos; recitation, Miss Audrey Beynon; songs, Mrs C. T. Ballantyne; Irish jig, Miss Iris Thompson; instrumental trio, Mrs Mangos (piano), Misses Nichol (violin and ’cello); vocal duet, Cealy Enting and Betty Fraser; Irish jig, Marjorie Morrison; songs, Mrs Ballantyne; pianoforte duet, Mrs Mangos and Miss Mangos. The accompaniments were played by Mesdames Finlay, Mangos and Miss U. McFarlane.

Mrs Parker the oldest member, lighted the candles on the cake and Mrs Winnington the first president, extinguished them. The cake was then cut by the Mayoress (Mrs Vlnnell) who congratulated the Institute on reaching its fourth birthday, and wished it success in the future. Mrs Finlay then presented a bouquet to Mrs Vinnell and a shoulder spray to Mrs Parker. The Mayoress then presented the aggregate prizes for the year as follows. —Handcraft: Mrs D. Ramsay 1, Mrs Winnington 2, Miss Pearse 3. Cooking: Mrs D. Ramsay 1, Miss Pearse 2, Mrs Pearse 3. Gardening: Mrs D. Ramsay 1, Miss Pearse 2, Mrs Pearse 3.

Mrs McAlister on behalf of the institute members presented shoulder sprays to Mrs Finlay (president), Mrs North (treasurer) and Miss M. Arras (secretary).

Just before afternoon tea was served the president thanked all who had contributed towards the most enjoyable concert and also Mr Gilmore who made the birthday cake and Miss G. Ramsay who had iced and all who had helped to make the year a happy and successful one.

Greetings were extended by the following—Tycho (Mrs McLeod), Fairview (Mrs Kelland), Claremont (Mrs White), Washdyke (Mrs Stocker), Rosewill (Mrs Chapman). In the evening there was a large attendance at the birthday dance. Miss Iris Thompson danced an Irish Jig. A lucky Monte Carlo was won by Mr and Mrs Ruston, the statue dance by Miss D. Stocker and Mr A. Jackson, and a competition by Mr S. Smith, Glen-iti. Music for the dance was supplied by Mr E. Sinclair, while extras were played by Mr and Mrs Finlay, Mr Jackson. Mr Ruston was M.C. assisted by Mr A. Jackson.
