GOVERNMENT MAY ENTER IT By Telegraph Klass WnWMi AUCKLAND, March 9. The announcement that the Government would probably establish modern cement works was made by the Minister of Public Works (Hon. R. Semple) to a deputation of settlers at Dairy Flat. It was pointed out to the Minister that cement at the present time was selling for 100/- a ton, and it was suggested that the price should be brought down to 30/- a ton so that farmers could freely use this essential material.
“The cement question has not been fully gone into,” said Mr Semple. “There are two alternatives. One is to fix the price of cement and the other is to establish a Government cement works. The Government and the farmer have both been suffering from having to pay high prices for cement. The Government will probably establish modern cement works to check the soaring prices. It is not the intention of the Labour Government to allow people to profiteer at the expense of others.”
