OBITUARY

THE LATE DR. GILRUTII Tlie late Dr. J. A. Gilnitli, whose death occurred in Australia last Friday, was bom in Arbroath, Scotland, in 1871, and was educated there and at Dundee, Glasgow, London, and Paris, He was appointed Government veterinarian in New Zealand in 1893, chief veterinarian in 1898, and pathologist to the Health Department in 1901. He was a member of the Royal Commission on Public Health in New Zealand in 1900. In 1907 he was appointed a colonel in the Defence Department, but he left New Zealand in the same year to take a position in the Australian Defence Department. From 1908 to 1912 Dr Gilruth was Professor of Veterinary Pathology and Director of the Research Institute at Melbourne University. From this position he was appointed Administrator of the Northern Territory, remaining there until 1920. He became Chief of the Division of Animal Health in the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research at Melbourne In 1930. His widow, who was formerly Miss Jennie McKay, is a New Zealander.
