GOOD SERVICE

MOTORISTS’ ANNUAL MEETING MEMBERSHIP INCREASES “I think we may be quite justified in holding the opinion that we have rendered good service during the past year,” said the president iMr S. G. McClelland) in moving the adoption of the annual report (previously published) at the annual meeting of the Automobile Association (South Canterbury) last night. There was an attendance of 25 members. The chairman, reviewing the year’s activities, said expenses had been kept down, and while the new club rooms had been added expense, they were an excellent investment. Income showed an increase of £234 and gave a credit balance of £lOO for the year. With membership increasing rapidly, he looked forward to a very bright future. In the South Island membership had increased by 2258, of which South Canterbury had contributed 234, which was most satisfactory. The motion was seconded by Mr J. Palliser. Appreciation of the patrol service and the work of the service officer (Mr T. Owers) was expressed by Mr M. H. Richards. The fact that the activities of the service officer in keeping before the travelling public the benefits provided by the Association had been largely responsible for the increase in membership was expressed by Mr F. Chittock. It was to be hoped the increase in interest in the Association would continue. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Election of Officers.

The following officers were elected: Patrons, Messrs A. S. Elworthy and H. A. LeCren; president, Mr S. G. McClelland; vice-presidents, Messrs W. J. Foote and J. M. Jenkins; committee, Mec-ffi S. G. McClelland, W. J. Foote, J. M. Jenkins, A. S. Aitken, A. R. Graham, N. P. Nelson, J. Palliser, M. B. Richards, M. H. Richards and Robert Wilson; solicitors, Messrs Tripp and Rolleston; auditor, Mr A. C. Martin. Mr M. H. Richards emphasised the nuisance of broken glass on the roads. He suggested that the matter be placed before the Transport Authority (Mr T. H. Langford) with a view to having regulations framed. The chairman pointed out that the regulations already threw on the motorist the liability of clearing the road of glass after an accident. Mr F. Chittock agreed with Mr Richard’s remarks, stating that there had been a good deal of glass on the roads recently. Mr Richards: It is mostly lemonade and beer bottles. (Laughter.) The desirability of painting level crossir: .signs on bitumen road surfaces was urged by Mr N. M. Orbell, who said he had brought the same matter up at the last annual meeting. A motorist kept his eyes in front, and would see a sign on the road more easily than the boards at the * side. A sign had been painted at the Hornby crossing, but after two months it had worn off and had not been repainted. The committee was recommended to go into the matter again. A suggestion by Mr J. R. Hart that 25 years of membership should be a qualification for life membership of the Association was referred to the committee. Votes of thanks were accorded the retiring officers and all who had assisted the Association during the year.
