NATIONALISTS’ MEETING AT FAIRLIE

To the Editor of “ The Timaru Herald “ Sir,—l feel quite sure that the report in your issue of Monday last of the meeting held in Fairlie must have been read with feelings of amusement, pity and contempt. Amusement at the now characteristic hollow utterances of Mr T. D. Burnett and his weak explanation of the choice of leader of the so-called National Party; pity for those who are so easily gulled by such balderdash, and contempt at the absence of any reference to a policy that would make a more just distribution of the national wealth. What concrete evidence, what justification has he for accusing the Labour Party of a “poison factory”? Does he know that the writer’s information in regard to the derogatory remarks concerning Rt. Hon. Mr Coates came from supporters of Mr Burnett’s Party at the elections? I will concede that Mr Burnett is fully qualified to be a judge of what constitutes a “poison factory.” it being in evidence at the Parish Hall on Saturday night last. Will the chairman, Mr C. V. Kirke, of whom I am given to understand made reference to the Prime Minister’s statement in regard to savings, repeat his utterance word for word in the columns of this paper? Mr Burnett should talk about dragging New Zealand down into the muck; he has played his part in the past, and with his associates would welcome the opportunity io repeat the process.—l am, etc., H. TRITT. Fairlie. November 25.
