WORKERS’ DWELLINGS

A DISASTROUS EXPERIENCE By Teleeraph—Hress Association CHRISTCHURCH, September 1. Following the disastrous results in the previous house-building scheme, the City Council does not intend to erect any more workers’ dwellings, according to the Finance Committee's report adopted at last night’s council meeting. The committee reported that the State Advances Corporation had written asking for some indication of the council’s intentions with respect to the erection of workers’ dwellings. The recommendation of the Committee, adopted by the Council, was that the reply to the Corporation should state that the council did not propose to erect any more workers’ dwellings in the meantime, and should point out that some years ago the Council advanced loans for the erection of 146 houses, with disastrous financial results, as the majority of the occupiers were very much in arrears. In 25 instances the Council had had to resume possession of the houses. It is also to be pointed out that there vme numerous dwellings being cected in the city by private individuals, and it w<-- considered that it is not necessary for the Council to embark on a housing scheme at the presen’ time.
